Several different measurement standards are used, depending on the end of use of the paper.听 For example, 80 pound cover weight stock is entirely different than 80 pound text weight.

Paper is measured differently in the United States compared to foreign manufacturers due to differences in measurement systems across the world.

The imperial measurement system used in the U.S. measures what is called the 鈥渂asis weight鈥. Basis weight refers to the weight in pounds for a full ream (500 sheets) of a specific standard size. For book (text) paper, the basis size is 17鈥 x 22鈥, while the standard size for cover paper is 25鈥 x 38鈥. For example, a 20 lb. bond paper means 500 sheets of this paper at its standard size of 17″ x 22″ weighs 20 pounds.

On the other hand, countries using the metric system measure stock by 鈥済rammage.鈥 This paper is measured in grams per square meter (gsm), and the higher the gsm, the heavier the paper. The use of different paper weights in commercial printing is important, as it can affect the overall appearance and perceived quality of the finished product.

If I walk in to an Ulta store and purchase a few items only using cash, my purchase is just one unassigned data point that will not lead to Ulta knowing me and my purchase history.

Similarly, I could pick products on their website, check out as a guest and use a Visa gift card to check out. If I really wanted to remain anonymous, I could activate a VPN (Virtual Private Network) to disguise my IP address, and I could have the product shipped to a P.O. Box so Ulta is not able to record data about me from my site visit.

I don鈥檛 do that for two reasons. For one, I don鈥檛 feel the need to take such drastic measures. And two, as a consumer, I want Ulta to know me better, and I know I need to share my information with them so I can have an adequate experience.

When I check out in-store or online anywhere, most stores provide the option to create an account with them, promising an easier checkout process for my next visit. Even better, many stores have loyalty programs to incentivize trading your information for perks, like getting your eleventh Chipotle burrito for free, picking out a free greeting card each month at Hallmark, getting a $10 credit at Eddie Bauer every so often or getting additional online coupons and deals to use at your local grocery store.

I receive print catalogs from businesses like Ulta, Eddie Bauer, Chewy, Bed Bath & Beyond and Wayfair, and I love to flip through them. I cut out the items I like and post them on the fridge so I can remember them when I decide to purchase something. And if my husband wants to buy a gift for me, he knows exactly where to look.

I鈥檓 not a die-hard fan of Ulta Beauty. I buy my cosmetics wherever is most convenient when it is time to buy. For example, if I purchase a certain hair spray from Ulta and then purchased the same hair spray eight weeks later, Ulta could analyze my purchase behavior and take action. If they enhance their data strategy to market specifically to me by recommending that hairspray seven weeks after my last purchase via a marketing email or product catalog, I鈥檓 sold.

When I give my information to a business, I expect them to begin customizing my experience as a buyer. I am excited for companies to begin offering more experiences unique to the buyer.

I would love to receive a catalog with a few pages dedicated to me based on my demographics and purchase history. For online stores with options to favorite items, save for later or add to a list, there lies huge opportunities to show customers what they really want.

What is case binding?

Case binding is a binding method used for hardcover books which involves encasing sewn or perfect-bound book blocks in covers of various materials. Valued for their durability, casebound products are designed to not only last for decades of frequent use but also to provide a beautifully crafted published work with seemingly endless possibilities.

Assembly required

The industrial construction of a casebound publication varies between machinery and binderies, but the basic process is as follows.听

After the inner pages of a publication are printed and folded into signatures, a gatherer sorts them in the correct sequence to create what is called a book block. Different binding methods can be finished with a hardcover to become a casebound product, but the most widely used process for casebound products is Smyth case binding.听

In this method, signatures are sewn together to create a book block. The book block undergoes nipping or smashing to compress the spine of the book and shape the spine to fit into its cover effectively. Adhesive is applied to the spine of the book block in the gluing off process and bracket tape is used to reinforce the spine鈥檚 binding and shape. An inline three-knife trimmer is then used to trim the three unbound edges of the book block to the final trim size.

At this stage, a variety of embellishments can be added, including edge treatments, headbands and bookmarks. Edge treatments include enhancements like edge printing, staining and gilding, where dye, colorants or gold leaf is applied to the non-spine edges of the book block. Headbands are strips of decorative cotton or silk that are attached to the top and bottom of the spine, and bookmarks are cords or ribbons which are attached to the top of the spine to serve as ornamental placeholders.

Covers and endsheets are each prepared separately before the final assembly of a casebound book. Although there are many ways to design covers, the process of making covers consists of a few key steps. If the cover material is able to be printed on, such as paper or linen, the cover is preprinted before it is trimmed to size. Covers are cut to be larger than the case and cuts or fold marks are made on the corners to ensure the cover folds around the case cleanly. Some cover applications, such as lamination or UV, are applied to the cover before casing in, while others, like hot foil or embossing, are applied after casing in.

During the process of casing in, a three-paneled board is trimmed and fed into a case making machine, which attaches a backlining over the boards a cloth backlining over the board. This board is usually made of cardboard or chipboard and can come in various weights. The inside of the cover is then coated in glue and pressed onto the base board. The excess cover material is folded around the board and secured in place with glue.听

Finally, adhesive is used to coat the endsheets, which attached the outside pages of the book block to the inside of the hard cover. The spine of the book block is then glued to backing material which wraps around the binding and spans between the spine creases.听

Weighing the options

The intensive case binding process produces excellent-quality printed works that will last a lifetime, if not longer. This is beneficial for library-quality books, durable yearbooks and textbooks and great for special-edition runs. The professional look and feel of the finished product is a benefit for customers who value the artisanship of well-crafted books. In the Smyth case binding process, the spine of the book block is adhered to the backlining instead of the inside of the case, which allows the pages to lay flat when opened.听

The options for casebound covers provide virtually limitless opportunities for creativity and design. There are a large variety of cover applications, including the following options:

  • Spot or flood lamination with gloss, matte or gritty finishing
  • Spot or flood UV with gloss, matte, satin or gritty finishing for glow-in-the-dark, thermochromic or photochromic effects
  • Die options such as hot foil, metal gloss, embossing and debossing
  • Laser cutting for covers and endsheets
  • Branding (provides a partial burn into case)
  • Clear or colored silk screen
  • Graining
  • Lenticular or crack-and-peel tip-ons
  • Scented varnishes
  • Namestamping

Cover materials like paper, cloth, leather or plexiglass can be used for case binding, and in some cases multiple materials can be used on the same case, known as quarter-bound, half-bound or three-quarter-bound covers. Slip cases, belly bands, trapper keeper covers and dust jackets can be created to wrap around the outside of the finished book.

Case binding allows for an optimal balance of durability and design, and is an excellent option for trade books, coffee table books, art portfolios and children鈥檚 books in addition to textbooks, yearbooks and library books. If cover options are important to the finished product, case binding is a great method to employ impart creativity into a book鈥檚 design. Case binding results in a beautiful product that will outlast most other publications on the bookshelf.听

As a note, the peak holiday season for the USPS has traditionally ended in December, usually on the next available business day following Christmas Day. What is Sewn Binding?

Sewn binding is one of the oldest binding methods in history, and it is still the most durable form of binding for printed products today. Sewn binding is a process which utilizes thread sewn through printed signatures to bind them together. There are multiple types of sewn binding, but the most widely used method is Smyth sewing. Sewn binding is most often used for hardcover or casebound publications, but sewn binding methods can be used for softcover products as well. Sewn binding is commonly used for premium novels, illustrated books, children鈥檚 books, textbooks, yearbooks, large catalogs and coffee table books.

Assembly required

Industrial manufacture of sewn binding products varies between machinery and binderies, but the main processes of sewn binding are as follows.

As with other offset or digital printing processes, sewn-bound publications begin with folded signatures. A signature is a grouping of pages (usually in increments of four up to 32) that are all printed on the front and back of one large sheet and folded together using a folding machine to paginate the sheets.

In Smyth sewing, which is also called section or saddle sewing, thread is sewn through the middle of each signature out and into the center of the next signature in a looping motion. In another method of sewn binding, called McCain or side stitching, thread is sewn down through the sides of all the signatures at once.

Before the sewn book block is bound with a hard or soft cover, the threads on the spine are compressed to reduce thread buildup and force out excess air. Thread buildup occurs when the thickness of the book block is increased due to the alignment of the thread stitches, and this extra thickness is compressed either through nipping, a process where the spine is clamped and pressure is applied only to the spine, or smashing, where pressure is applied to the entire front and back of the book.

In another process called backing, the book block is clamped between steel plates and the binding edge of the signatures are bent outward over the clamped edges, resulting in a spine that is wider than the rest of the pages. This is sometimes necessary to shape the spine to effectively fit into its cover, and it creates a slight nailhead for the covers to rest on and impresses hinge creases that allow the book to open. The stitched book blocks are then sent to a binder where they are glued and trimmed.

For case binding, the sewn book block receives bracket tape in addition to being glued off, and the book block is trimmed before casing in. For softcover binding, glue is applied to the spine of the book and the cover is attached before it is trimmed to size. In reference to sewn binding methods, gluing off is a process in which glue is applied to the spine of the book block to reinforce the thread sewing and the shape of the spine.

In the process of softcover binding, endsheets are not required and the binding is complete after the book is trimmed and the glue has dried. Through a special method offered for Smyth softcover books, there is a layflat option which does not glue the spine of the book block directly to the spine of the cover. This layflat binding method allows the pages to be more flexible to stay open for use of the product.

If a casebound option is selected, an adhesive is used to coat the endsheets, which are attached to the outside pages of the book block and the inside of the hard or soft cover. The spine of the book block can be glued either to the spine of the cover or to backing material which wraps around the stitching to span between the spine creases. Although there are many ways to customize the sewn binding process, the end result will always be a durable and long-lasting, high-quality publication.

Use cases for sewn-bound products

Sewn binding is a popular method for premium printed products with exceptional quality. However, this option can increase the cost and take longer to produce. Thread sewing ensures a greater resistance to wear from years of frequent use, and sewn binding including adhesives provides more reinforcement to the spine and page stability than sewn binding alone.

Publications produced through sewn binding are most often used for hardcover or casebound printed products because sewn binding results in a more durable, layflat books. Unlike perfect binding, sewn binding is suitable for publications with heavier papers.

Enhancements can include edge treatments, headbands and bookmarks. Edge treatments include enhancements like edge staining and gilding, where dyes, colorants or gold leaf is applied to the non-spine edges of the book block. Headbands are strips of decorative cotton or silk that are attached to the top and bottom of the spine, and bookmarks are cord or ribbons which are attached to the top of the spine to serve as ornamental placeholders.

Since Smyth sewn binding sews each signature together one at a time, the binding it creates has more flexibility. If that spine is adhered to the liner and not the spine of the cover, the product will have the ability to lay flat. Layflat capabilities are important when there are images or spreads that span the gutter between the pages. This is great for art portfolios and coffee table books where design and longevity are equally important factors.

Weighing the options

When considering sewn binding for printed products, important variables to be considered are page count and layflat capabilities. The Smyth sewing process allows flexibility for the pages due to the layflat nature of the product. Sewn binding creates a durable finished product, and it is the most suitable binding technique if a long-lasting, professional publication is desired. This is particularly beneficial when its readers will appreciate the craftsmanship of the finished piece.

According to the American Transportation Research Institute鈥檚 (ATRI) Top Industry Issues report released in October 2022, the confluence of several world events 鈥渞esulted in dramatic industry impacts including record-high diesel prices, severe equipment and parts shortages, skyrocketing inflation, and persistent workforce shortages, ranging from drivers to technicians to warehouse and distribution center workers.鈥

These critical industry issues have a widespread area of effect, and result in price increases and shipping delays for businesses and consumers alike. 鈥淥ur customers are getting hit by this at all angles. Everything that moves is hit with increased pricing, from incoming paper to delivery after print,鈥 said Vicky Dansereau, 色情论坛鈥檚 Corporate Mailing Services Specialist. 鈥淭his is affecting all aspects of all delivery.鈥疷SPS, UPS, FedEx, LTL, Truckload, everything.鈥疻e, alongside most businesses, are also experiencing delays in delivery time due to the shortage of available drivers to take loads.鈥

The factors causing shortages and bottlenecks in the supply chain are multi-faceted and daunting. However, their increasing visibility has led to positive efforts, such as increased funding for solution strategies and the impetus for action at federal and state levels. For each of the critical issues outlined through ATRI鈥檚 2022 survey, there are also strategies for creating programs and conducting further research into root causes.听

ATRI has been a reliable source for the past 18 years for the prioritization of the trucking industry鈥檚 most critical issues and preferred strategies for addressing each issue. These yearly reports are used by American Trucking Associations (ATA) and State Trucking Associations (STA) to develop and implement strategies and programs based on insights on ongoing and emerging priorities in the trucking industry.

The stated critical issues, proposed strategies and data were collected from the Critical Issues in the Trucking Industry 鈥 2022 analysis conducted by ATRI.听

1. Fuel Prices

Unsurprisingly, the price of diesel was selected as the number one issue. The war in Ukraine is a leading factor in the marketplace chaos and pricing volatility of fuel among other resources. The cancellation of the XL pipeline and decree against federal drilling add more to the interplay of factors affecting the fuel supply. In another study conducted by ATRI, Operational Costs of Trucking, a year-over-year increase of over 35% was identified for fuel cost per mile. These diesel prices are especially challenging for owner-operators, as they have less opportunities to negotiate fuel surcharges.

Possible solutions include advocating for federal action to stabilize the fuel supply and minimize price volatility, such as expanding refining capacity and increasing domestic drilling.

A short-term solution would be to create a 鈥渇uel-tax holiday鈥 at the expense of road and bridge construction, which is recognizably problematic, while a long-term solution is expansion of other fuel sources including alternative and renewable fuels. Providing financial incentives for alternative and renewable fuels would be beneficial to support industry growth and reduce costs during development and market expansion, but the front-loaded costs of changing to fuel alternatives is unpopular, with only seven percent of respondents to ATRI鈥檚 Operational Costs of Trucking analysis stating they use some form of alternative fuel, and these were primarily in local and regional delivery operations.

2. Driver Shortage

The driver shortage has been rated as the top industry concern for the past five years and came in at a close second in this year鈥檚 report. According to the report, “There are a number of underlying factors contributing to the driver shortage, including a retiring driver workforce, the challenging lifestyle, and regulatory pressures leading some drivers to leave the industry.”听

The growth of e-commerce has created an unprecedented number of job openings for local and regional drivers, and those numbers only continue to rise. The ATA states the industry shortage of over 80,000 truck drivers could grow to over 160,000 drivers by 2030.

As the number of open positions increases, the competition for workers only becomes fiercer. In April 2020, there were 4.9 unemployed persons for every job opening in the U.S. According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics that number decreased to 0.6 unemployed persons for every job opening as of August 2022.听

The proposed strategies to combat the driver shortage include expanding programs to break down barriers to recruit more women and drivers between the ages of 18 to 20 years. In addition to expediting CDL issuance and identifying ways to overcome insurance hurdles for younger drivers, there is an increased emphasis on improving the driving lifestyle. Measures here seek to meet Millennial and Gen Z priorities, as 84% of current younger drivers in the industry are motivated by company culture.听

Other ranked industry issues, like driver compensation at number four and driver retention at number seven, are intertwined with the driver shortage. However, these issues are each complex and require different strategies for improvement. Driver compensation has increased by 9.8% over the past year, which is unprecedentedly high, leaving many concerned about the sustainability of these pay rates for companies. Starting bonuses have increased by 26% over the past four years, while retention bonuses have increased by 57% in order for fleets to retain their best drivers. Although there has been a large research effort for the driver shortage, the proposed strategies for driver compensation and retention center around conducting in-depth research to determine the relationship driver compensation, benefits, and safety have with driver satisfaction, retention and productivity.

3. Truck Parking

Since 2015, the lack of available truck parking has been in the top five critical issues and has been the number one issue specifically for truck drivers for three consecutive years. This critical issue is closely tied to others, such as driver recruitment, retention and safety. A 2019 survey identified about 313,000 truck parking spaces across the nation, which equated to one parking space for every 11 drivers. A large effort is underway to expand truck stop facilities to create more parking spaces, increase safety and be more pet-friendly to allow drivers to bring pets with them on the road.

After years of industry concern, this problem is beginning to gain traction with federal leaders. Recently, the U. S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) awarded nearly $40 million in grants to expand truck parking capacity in Florida and Tennessee. Many in the trucking industry (over 35% of respondents) believe dedicated federal funding for truck parking is the best strategy, but over 38% of respondents believe it may be more beneficial to address truck parking at the local and regional level to reduce the regulatory burdens limiting the construction and expansion of truck parking facilities.听

It鈥檚 not all bad news

Although it seems more and more industry issues are unprecedented, it is important to note the top critical issues in the trucking industry are not new. In fact, the work on many of the presented issues is well-underway.听

The Biden-Harris Administration signed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) into law in late 2021. This ended years of political stalemates in investing in transportation infrastructure and many programs have been enacted to improve the current driver shortage. Additionally, a U.S. House bill awaiting passage later this year could provide nearly $800 million to transportation agencies to expand truck parking facilities. On another positive note, in September 2022, a federal judge struck down a truck-only toll program in Rhode Island as unconstitutional.

With the extensive and interconnected critical challenges present today, it is imperative to understand how the interplay between various supply chain, employment and other issues in the trucking industry is affecting you or your business.听
